The fire is 70,000 acres. Not really out of danger yet. It’s 20% contained. There’s only one road between it and the town of Foresthill. Something like 11,000 people are evacuated, and 75 homes have been destroyed that we know of. The people that confirm building destruction don’t go in until it’s safe.

In July I skipped an update and went with my Aunt to French Meadows. It was a little pilgrimage to where she met her late husband. She stayed at Miner’s Camp in Foresthill, which is among the most adorable lodging accommodations I’ve ever seen. Each cabin is like a tiny house and it’s all mining themed. We ate dinner at a quintessential old western saloon.

We also went by the northernmost grove of giant sequoias. They’re about 500 years old and the fire is rapidly heading toward them.

That’s the only time I visited Foresthill and those places and the people we passed by have been on my mind. It was a perfect day and I’m really glad I went so I can better appreciate what’s at stake. Also the National Parks service has closed something like 200,000 acres of that section of Tahoe National Forest until 2023. Let this be a lesson to go see things while you have the chance!

Everyone’s packed up and ready to evacuate if needed. and we’re keeping an eye on it.

The reading of Chesterton’s Gateway has concluded! I have finished the book and highlighted my favorite quotes. I need to catch up to the comments, though. I’ll announce the next book next week!
